2015 Yangarra Ironheart Shiraz (McLaren Vale) 97 POINTS
Hand-picked, wild yeast open-fermented with 25% whole bunches, matured for 15 months in French oak (40% new). A distilled essence of shiraz from two blocks within a single estate vineyard. It’s in no way overdone, but it does have some of the authoritarian stance of top flight cabernet. The black fruits speak in one voice of the ironstone soil in which the vines are planted. Great vintage, great wine.
2016 Shy Susan Chardonnay (Tasmania) 97 POINTS
All the right moves were made at the right time from picking through to bottling. The balance is utterly perfect, the acidity seemingly effortlessly calculated and framed, the varietal fruit expression mid stone and citrus fruit, oak harnessed to do its job just so. Top-gold Tasmanian Wines Show ’18.
2016 Yarra Yering Dry Red No.2 (Yarra) 97 POINTS
95% shiraz, 2% viognier, 2% mataro, 1% marsanne, whole berries open-fermented with some stalks added back in, some batches with frozen viognier skins on the bottom, some with marsanne skins, matured for 12 months in French barriques (30% new). The most highly aromatic bouquet with perfumed fruits and spices dancing on the forest floor, the palate a liquid expression of the bouquet. Alive with juicy, gently savoury tannins beating a beautiful tattoo, the finish drawn out by the peacock’s tail of the multifaceted aftertaste.
