Dual Trophies for new vintage Angullong white wines.

Angullong Wines has been awarded two Trophies at the recent 2019 Australian Highland Wine Show.

The newly released 2019 Angullong Pinot Grigio was award the Trophy for the Best Pinot Gris/Grigio of the Show with its partner, the 2019 Angullong Sauvignon Blanc, awarded the Trophy for Best Sauvignon Blanc.

To add to the awards, the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc was also awarded a gold medal at the 2019 NSW Wine Awards, placing it in contention for a Trophy at the upcoming presentation on the 18 October.

“The 2019 vintage was tough, with the crop well down on our average yields,” explained Angullong’s Ben Crossing. “However, the quality was certainly high, which is reflected in these results.”

The Australian Highland Wine Show is open to wines grown on vineyards with an elevation of 500 metres and above, and includes Orange, Mudgee, NSW Southern Highlands, Tumburumba, Hilltops and Canberra District. This year’s awards were judged by Toni Paterson MW, Rob Geddes MW, Tempus Two winemaker Andrew Duff and Wine Selectors Will Figueira.

“With the continued drought, we are conscious that water remains a key issue and are mindful of crop levels when pruning and planning for next vintage.  We are lucky to have access to water however our dams remain very low, so we continue to manage our irrigation carefully.”

As with the last vintage, Angullong will utilise a range of measures to bring the best out of their vines including spraying a naturally occurring clay-based crop protectant on some vines.

“Last year we successfully trialled the kaolin clay-based crop protectant as a defence against harsh light, ultraviolet radiation and high temperatures. The protectant not only helps reduce heat stress to the vines and reduce water use during extreme heat conditions but will reduce sunburn on exposed grapes.

“The ongoing drought and change in climate are major issues and, as farmers, it is imperative that we instigate sustainable practices to ensure we can continue to work with the land to produce a quality product well into the future.”
