With a European-like terroir, it was no wonder early migrants agreed on Tasmania as a place to settle and eventually produce quality wines.
Fast forward over a century and Tasmania is now regarded as a world leader in the production of cool climate style wines.
It is similar to Orange with cool winters and moderate summers, allowing for a slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines of lovely depth of flavour.
Take 2017 ‘Young Gun of Wine’ finalist Peter Dredge and his aptly named ‘Dr Edge’ wine label for example.
Hailing from the Derwent Valley region of Tasmania, just west of Hobart, Peter has been influential in the Tassie wine scene. His small batch wines punch way above their weight.
Try the newly released 2018 Dr Edge Pinot Noir, 2019 Riesling and 2019 Chardonnay which utilise the best grapes from various vineyards across the state.
